PottyTraining your Pomeranian Puppy
I have decided to put something up about house training as I receive so many emails regarding potty training or should I say potty training gone wrong!
House training your Pomeranian puppy requires much patience and perseverance in the first weeks. If you have purchased your puppy from a reputable registered breeder your task will be so much easier. Puppies born and reared in dirty condtions will be very hard to house train if not impossible to completely house train. Most registered breeders will have already commenced training your new baby to house training. Though this process will most likely take several weeks your puppy most likely will not be house broke when you take him home but he should be on his way. The number one mistake people make is giving their new puppy unsupervised access to your home. The biggest mistake anyone can make is to bring your new Pomeranian home and let him run around your home for a few days going to potty anywhere and then deciding to start potty training. Your home will smell like the puppies potty place everywhere and your task will be a lot harder and slower to achieve. You wouldn't let a year old baby have free rain of the house with out a diaper or with a pair of sissors would you? So why would you let your puppy have free rain of the house with out supervision? It is no different, your puppy will piddle and chew on things, he is a puppy, just as a baby would piddle and cut things if he was left unsupervised. The Pomeranian puppy is kept in a playpen or a crate with clean newspaper down, food, water and a comfortable bed. The Pomeranian puppy sleeps in this area and when I have to go out I leave the baby Pomeranian confined to the playpen or crate. When you are busy and want to let the puppy be out of the crate teather him to you with a leash. Slide leash through a belt loop on your pants and back through it's self and attach it to your puppy. If you notice your puppy doing circles or putting his nose the the floor and making a backwards S this is a sign that they are going to go potty. All dogs do this by nature so if you pay close attention you will catch them before they go potty. The trick at this point is to pick up the puppy and carry him out to where you want him to go potty. They have very small bladders and will not make it out side on if you just walk them. Always carry them out when it is time for them to do their business.
As soon as the puppy wakes up you should take him or her outside to the area you want puppy to use as a potty area. You also need to take puppy to this area after meals and reward puppy when he or she has done the right thing with heaps of cuddles and tell him how clever and good he or she is. This takes a lot of patience and you must be consistant, but doing this right in the first few weeks it will pay ioff n the long run. Accidents do and will happen. When they do remember who's job it is to keep the puppy supervised and TEACH TEACH TEACH!!!
DO NOT SMACK BABY OR ATTEMPT TO RUB HIS NOSE IN HIS ACCIDENT. Dogs do not understand this. You may grab you puppy by the scruff on the neck, shack GENTLY and them him NO in a very stern voice, then immediately take him out to where you'd like him to go potty. This is how mommy dog tells her young she is not happy. It is much more effective that spanking. Dogs do not spank, they do not understand why we are doing that. Dogs are not miniature people, they are dogs, speak their language.
Clean up the accident immediately and ensure there is no lingering smells or puppy will use this area again and again. Make sure you use a urine nutralizer, not a cover up. I suggest urine off but you can buy different brands at most supermarkets.

If your puppy has been using a rug or newspaper you can place either item in the place outside were you want the puppy to go potty. The smell will help the puppy associate this area with going potty.
Another helpful item to use when potty training your new baby. Is the Pee Wee I am not sure on the name, there are several brands. These are avilable from a lot of pet shops and already smell to the puppy like urine. Place one of these where you want he puppy to go potty and the smell from the pads will encourage the puppy to use the pad.
White vinegar is an excellent inexpensive cleaner to use and is safe on most carpets. As it dries the oder of the vinegar evaporates.
